📖 How to Measure Blood Pressure

instructions_subtitle

1

Preparation

Sit quietly for 5 minutes before measuring. Avoid caffeine, exercise, or smoking for at least 30 minutes prior.

💡 Tip: Empty your bladder before measuring - a full bladder can raise blood pressure readings.

2

Correct Positioning

Place the cuff on your bare upper arm, aligned with your heart. The cuff should be snug but not tight.

Arm supported on a flat surface (like a table)
Feet flat on the floor, legs uncrossed
Back supported against the chair
Cuff bottom edge 2-3 cm above the elbow crease
3

Taking the Measurement

Rest for 1 minute, then take 2-3 readings, waiting 1 minute between each. Record all readings or the average.

⚠️ important

  • Do not talk during measurement
  • Keep arm relaxed and muscles soft
  • Measure at the same time each day (morning and evening)

⭐ Best Practices

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Why do my readings vary throughout the day?

Blood pressure naturally fluctuates. It is typically lower at night and rises during the day. Stress, activity, meals, and medications all affect readings. This is normal - focus on trends over time rather than single readings.

Which arm should I use?

Use the same arm each time. If you have a choice, use the left arm. If one arm consistently reads higher, use that arm for all measurements and tell your doctor.

My cuff hurts. Is that normal?

The cuff should feel tight but not painful. If it hurts, the cuff may be too small or positioned incorrectly. Stop the measurement and reposition the cuff.

Can I measure through clothing?

No, always measure on bare skin. Even thin sleeves can affect accuracy by 5-10 mmHg.

Why is the pulse reading important?

Your heart rate (pulse) shows how fast your heart is beating. Resting heart rate between 60-100 is normal for most adults. Consistently high rates (over 100) or irregular rhythms should be discussed with your doctor.
